Council garages and parking bays

Questions and answers

We review an application when we receive it. If you are eligible to rent a garage, you will be added to the waiting list for the areas you have chosen. It can take some time to get to the top of the waiting list. We can only offer out garages that we have available. Please do not re-apply.

If a garage is available to rent, it will be offered to someone on the waiting list. Although garage users should be checking their garages regularly, some may not visit or check their garage for long periods. This means a garage may appear unused, but is in fact rented.

Follow our guidance for requesting a housing repair.

Most of our garages come with one lock. You may wish to add additional locks after you have started renting a garage from us. All that we ask is that you do not make large holes in the walls, floor, frame or door.

Providing you are abiding by the terms and conditions, you may continue to rent a garage for however long you need to. If we require the garage back, we will provide written notification with a minimum of seven days’ notice.

Yes. However you will need to make a new garage application and select the option for a transfer. The waiting list procedure will still apply, so you may need to continue renting your current garage until we can transfer your tenancy to another garage.

We cannot guarantee a 100% watertight garage and the nature of a garage space means dampness is common. All items are stored at the owners own risk. Swindon Borough Council will not be responsible for any damage or loss caused to any vehicle or property occupying the garage.
