Tell us if you move home
If you are moving to a new address, we need to know so we can update your Council Tax account.
Whether you are a resident, tenant, or landlord, it is important to let us know when you move or when your tenants change. This helps us keep Council Tax, electoral records, and local services accurate.
Who should tell us
- Residents moving into, within, or out of Swindon Borough Council area
- Tenants starting or ending a tenancy in Swindon Borough Council area
- Landlords or managing agents when tenants move in or out
How to update your address
- Complete our online form and choose the option for residents, tenants, or landlords.
- Have your details ready, including old and new addresses, your moving date, and your Council Tax account number (if available).
- Submit the form. We will send you a confirmation once your records are updated. If these circumstances do not apply to you, call 0345 302 2316.

Council Tax liability for private rented tenants
From 1 May 2026, if you rent your home and give notice to end your tenancy, you may still be responsible for Council Tax until the end of your notice period. This applies even if you move out before the notice period ends.
If you are not sure when your notice period ends, check your tenancy agreement or speak to your landlord or letting agent.
If you move out early, you should still tell us your moving date so we can issue the correct final bill.
Final bill
After your move is processed, Swindon Borough Council will send you a final bill showing any remaining balance.
Any amount owed must be paid within 14 days unless you pay by Direct Debit, then the final payment will be taken on the next payment date.
Changing your Council Tax details does not automatically register you on the electoral roll. However, this can also be done online. See: Register to vote.
Delays in March and April
We receive a high number of enquiries in March and April after annual Council Tax bills are issued. It may take several weeks to reply and there may be delays in issuing updated bills.
