Why we may close a public right of way

A temporary closure order is a legal order. It can close a public right of way for up to six months.

We may make an order to:

• protect people while work takes place on or near the path
• protect people from a danger on the path
• allow litter to be cleared from the path

The Secretary of State can extend the order if the reason for the closure continues.

Before we make an order

We place a public notice at the site and publish a notice in the Swindon Advertiser. We also publish full details on this website.

When the order is made

We seal the order and publish another set of notices in the same places. The notices confirm when the closure will start.
