Get rid of pests

We do not provide a pest control service.

If you have pests in your home, contact a pest control company for advice. They can assess the problem, recommend treatment and identify any repairs needed to stop pests getting into your property.

Common pests include:

  • rats
  • mice
  • bed bugs
  • cockroaches

Treatment can usually remove an infestation and help prevent pests returning.

Before booking a treatment, ask the company for a quote so you understand the cost.

You can search for local pest control companies and find advice on dealing with pests on the British Pest Control Association (BPCA) website.

Other pest control companies may operate locally but not be listed by the BPCA. If you choose a company that is not BPCA approved, check their references before using their services.

If you cannot afford the cost of pest control treatment, check whether your home insurance policy provides cover.

If you rent your home privately

We may be able to help if a defect in your home is allowing pests to enter.

Examples include:

  • holes around pipework
  • holes in external walls
  • drainage problems

You must first report the problem to your landlord in writing and give them an opportunity to investigate and carry out repairs.

If your landlord does not investigate or resolve the issue, you can get advice through our private tenant support service.

Environmental Health Officers can take action against owners of significantly infested land or property where this is necessary to control an infestation or prevent damage caused by pests.

If you believe your pest problem is being caused by a neighbouring landowner not controlling an infestation on their land, email residentialservices@swindon.gov.uk.

If you are a council tenant

We may arrange and pay for pest control treatment and repairs if:

  • the infestation was present before you moved in
  • the infestation is being caused by a defect in the property that you have already reported to housing repairs

Report the problem by requesting a housing repair.

Request a housing repair

In all other circumstances, you are responsible for arranging and paying for any pest control treatment you need.
