Step 3: Eligibility to join the housing register

The housing allocation policy and priority bands

We are legally required to have a policy explaining how we allocate council housing in Swindon. For easy access, our housing allocations policy is published online.

Although there are rules all local authorities must follow, each authority can adapt its policy to local priorities, so policies may differ.

We are committed to fair and transparent allocation, prioritising vulnerable people and those with the greatest housing need.

Due to high demand, the average waiting time for council housing in Swindon is about four years. In Step 2, we emphasise the importance of exploring other housing options during this period.
