On this page: Information about parking for people with disabilities, including the Blue Badge scheme and Shopmobility.
Parking for People with Disabilities
Parking for people with disabilities is free in Swindon except in the Brunel North, Brunel West and Fleming Way car parks (where the tariff is the same as for other customers) and most car parks have designated spaces for this group of people.
When parked, valid disabled badges (please see Blue Badge Scheme below) must be on display at all times and there is no limit on the length of stay.
Swindon also has its own Shopmobility car park, on the ground floor of the Wyvern Car Park. This has up to 26 dedicated bays for Shopmobility users (during open hours only) and eight dedicated Blue Badge Bays available.
Blue Badge Scheme
The Blue Badge scheme (formerly known as the Orange Badge scheme) is a national arrangement of parking concessions for people with severe walking difficulties who travel either as drivers or passengers.
The scheme also applies to registered blind people, and people with severe upper limb disabilities who regularly drive a vehicle but cannot turn a steering wheel by hand.
Badge holders are allowed to park close to facilities and services such as public buildings, shops, etc.
How to Apply
You can begin the process of applying for a Blue Badge by filling in an application form in one of two ways:
A printed application form can also be picked up from Swindon Borough Council Customer Services at Swindon Direct.
You will need to provide two 'passport style' photos – which need to be provided in a digital format . If you do not have the facilities to provide a digital photo, this service can be provided free of charge by visiting Swindon Direct.
Further Information About the Blue Badge Scheme
Please see the Department for Transport website: Blue Badge Scheme (www.dft.gov.uk/topics/access/blue-badge).
Swindon's Shopmobility scheme is available for anyone with limited mobility and provides a selection of manually-propelled and electrically-powered wheelchairs and scooters. The aim of Shopmobility is simply to help people with mobility difficulties to be able to shop and use the facilities in Swindon's town centre.
The Shopmobility Centre is located in the Wyvern Car Park in Islington Street, Swindon and offers free parking facilities for users of the service.
