Who can apply

Sheltered housing offers a home for older people who wish to live independently and have varying housing needs.

You can apply for sheltered housing if you are over 60 years old. However, individuals receiving Disability Living Allowance can apply if they are over 50 years old.


Support available in sheltered housing

The support provided depends on the housing scheme. Most schemes typically offer:

  • self-contained flats, bungalows or studio flats
  • carpeted and lit internal corridors
  • fully furnished communal lounges
  • efficient central heating systems
  • communal laundry facilities
  • high levels of fire protection and security
  • 24-hour emergency alarm service
  • guest rooms for visitors
  • regular coffee mornings and social activities
  • support from a Sheltered Housing Officer or visiting scheme manager
