Repairing Swindon's roads
We know that the condition of local roads is an important concern for residents across Swindon. Our annual resident survey repeatedly highlights a desire for the council to prioritise road repairs and maintenance.
That’s why we want to be clear and open in explaining our approach, including the challenges and financial constraints we face.
Limited resources means that in 2025/26 we will spend more than £5m on highways and pathways.
This includes spending £1.5m on planned maintenance and surface dressing for major carriageways and £1.25m on planned maintenance for minor roads, as well as funding for routine road maintenance, such as £170,000 on reactive pothole repairs. This maintenance also includes patching repairs, road markings and traffic light maintenance.
Repairs can include full resurfacing works (where a contractor will dig up the current road surface and relay new tarmac in an effort to make the road last longer), repairs for individual potholes, patching repairs for larger sections of roads that don’t need a full resurface, and retexturing works (adding grip back to the road surface).
As we do not maintain the A419 or M4, please report any damage to either of these roads to National Highways.
