Pre-tenancy training

If you do not currently have a council housing tenancy and are bidding for a council home, you must complete our pre-tenancy training before you can be offered a tenancy.

Please note: if you do not complete the training, we will suspend your housing application.

Complete the training

We will email you access to the course when it looks likely that your bid will be successful. Make sure the contact details on your housing application are up to date so you can receive your log-in information.

If your application is suspended, you will have three months to either:

  • complete the pre-tenancy training
  • contact the Tenant Academy

If you do not do either of these, we will close your housing application.

After you complete the course

When you complete the training, you can download a certificate. You do not need to print it unless you want to keep a copy.

We keep a record of everyone who enrols on and completes the course. Once you have finished the training, we will update your housing application.

If you are worried about the course or are having difficulty completing it, contact the Tenant Academy team. We can discuss what support is available to help you complete the training.

If you are already a council tenant and would like tenancy training, contact us or speak to your housing officer to discuss your options.

What the course covers

The pre-tenancy course includes information about:

  • tenancy agreements
  • tenant and landlord rights and responsibilities
  • rent and the different ways to pay it
  • living in your home
  • repairs and maintenance

Each section ends with a short quiz to check your understanding.

Additional courses

You will also have access to short courses that can help you prepare to move, including:

  • loan shark awareness
  • decorating your home
  • Be the Change, which includes tips on saving money while helping to reduce your carbon footprint

Access the training

If you already have your log-in details, you can access the training through the Tenant Academy training portal.

Log-in instructions will be sent to the email address on your housing application.
