BSW Position Statements

Autistic Burnout

This page explains the position of Bath, North East Somerset, Swindon and Wiltshire Integrated Care Board (BSW ICB) on the terms Autistic Burnout.

Position on term

Professionals in Bath, North East Somerset, Swindon and Wiltshire Integrated Care Board (BSW ICB) do not use the term Autistic Burnout. Whilst it is recognised that the diagnosis of ‘Burnout’ is included in ICD11 as a chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed, there is no agreed diagnostic criteria for the term ‘Autistic Burnout’.

The ICB do not endorse using the diagnosis of Autistic Burnout on documents such as Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs), preferring instead to describe a child or young person’s presenting needs which may include exhaustion, loss of function or reduced tolerance to stimulus, and appropriate support should be put in place.

Support for Autism can be found via the Autism webpages.
