BSW Position Statements

PANDAS/PANS

This page explains the position of Bath, North East Somerset, Swindon and Wiltshire Integrated Care Board (BSW ICB) on the terms Paediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal Infections (PANDAS) and Paediatric Acute-onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome (PANS).

Position on terms

Professionals in Bath, North East Somerset, Swindon and Wiltshire Integrated Care Board (BSW ICB) do not use the terms Paediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal Infections (PANDAS) and Paediatric Acute-onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome (PANS).

This is because it is not recognised in the current diagnostic classifications used by clinicians.

The ICB do not endorse using the diagnosis of PANDAS or PANS on documents such as Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs), preferring instead to describe a child or young person’s presenting needs which may include repetitive type behaviours, vocals or motor tics.
