Managing road safety
Road safety education and training
We provide road safety education and training for people of all ages. Our programmes help everyone use roads more safely.
Some programmes support people who may be at greater risk on the roads, including:
- children
- older people
- cyclists
- motorcyclists
- young or inexperienced drivers
We also run publicity campaigns and events to reach larger groups of road users when appropriate.
Road safety for children aged 0 to 5
We work with health professionals and early years settings to provide road safety information and advice.
This support is for new parents, carers and early years staff. It covers child car seats and general road safety for young children.

Road safety for children aged 5 to 11
We offer National Standard cycle training, known as Bikeability, to all primary schools in Swindon.
We can also advise schools about suitable road safety resources and topics for Key Stages 1 and 2. These help children learn basic road safety rules and skills.
Road safety for young people aged 11 to 14
Moving from primary to secondary school is an important time. Young people often start making more journeys without an adult.
People in this age group are at greater risk of being injured on the road, particularly when walking.
Road safety education for this age group covers:
- risk-taking and its possible consequences
- pressure from friends
- distractions, such as mobile phones
Road safety for young people aged 14 to 16
Young people often travel more independently at this age. They may also travel with young drivers or start learning to ride a moped.
Road safety education helps students:
- understand and manage risks
- encourage their friends to make safer choices
- keep themselves and other people safe
