Annual collision data review
Our collision data shows where and why injury collisions happen in Swindon. We use this information to review road safety priorities and support our Road Safety Strategy.
Road collision figures
Each year, there are an average of:
- 354 road traffic collisions on Swindon’s road network
- 442 casualties resulting from these collisions
The collision dashboard shows that recorded road casualties are decreasing across all types of casualty collision.
Common factors in collisions
The data records factors that may have contributed to a collision. The most common factors are:
- a driver failing to look properly, or being careless, reckless, or in a hurry
- a slippery road
- someone failing to judge another person’s speed
These factors do not always mean that a person was legally responsible for the collision.

How we collect collision data
Wiltshire Police collects information about personal injury collisions under the Department for Transport’s STATS19 reporting requirements.
We only record personal injury collisions reported to the police. There may be a delay before a reported collision appears in our database.
We do not hold data about:
- collisions where nobody was injured
- incidents that were not reported to the police
We make every effort to ensure the data is accurate. However, it may change if more information becomes available.
Some data may not have completed the full validation process. This means our figures may not match statistics published elsewhere.
