Pedestrian crossing review
We review requests for new or improved pedestrian crossings each year. The review helps us decide which locations should be prioritised.
Request a new or improved crossing
If you think a location would benefit from a new or improved pedestrian crossing, contact your ward councillors.
How we assess requests
We collect information about each suggested location, including:
- how many pedestrians, cyclists, and other non-motorised road users use the crossing point
- the speed and volume of motor traffic
- the types of vehicles using the road
- how pedestrians and vehicles interact at the crossing point
- the possible effect of a crossing on the road network
We use weighted and unweighted calculations to measure the level of conflict between pedestrians and motor vehicles. We consider these results alongside other information about the site.
This helps us decide whether changes to the crossing facilities are justified.
What happens after the review
We report the results to ward councillors.
We may recommend priority locations for the following year’s works programme. Any work will depend on available funding.
Types of pedestrian crossing
The type of crossing will depend on the location and its characteristics. Options include:
- a pedestrian refuge
- a zebra crossing
- a puffin crossing, controlled by traffic signals for pedestrians
- a toucan crossing, controlled by traffic signals for pedestrians and cyclists
