Your energy supplier can upgrade your existing gas and electricity meters to a smart meter.

This is part of a national scheme. It is free, and you can ask your supplier for one now.

Benefits of smart meters

Smart meters can help you understand and manage your energy use.

They:

  • come with an in-home display that shows how much energy you are using in pounds and pence, in near real time
  • send accurate meter readings, so you do not get estimated bills
  • can work in prepayment mode or credit mode
  • give prepayment customers more flexible ways to top up, including through apps and online
  • can help you access cheaper time-of-use tariffs

Smart meters are part of a smarter energy system.

The information they provide can help the energy system use more renewable power, such as wind, solar and hydro power. This can reduce reliance on fossil fuels.
