Apply for a new hackney carriage or private hire vehicle licence

You need to hold a licence to use your vehicle as a hackney carriage or for private hire.

On issue of a vehicle licence, you will receive vehicle license plates, these are valid for one year.

Before you apply

You should make sure the vehicle complies with our standards and specifications for licensing.

We recommend that you read the vehicle licence handbook carefully as this will help you to find out if your vehicle is suitable to be licensed.

When you apply, you will need to:

  • provide some details about you and your vehicle
  • book a slot for a vehicle inspection
  • pay a fee by debit or credit card
  • upload a copy of your vehicle log book (V5) or proof of ownership

Vehicle inspection

We will inspect your vehicle to make sure it meets our standards and specifications for licensing a vehicle.

The inspection happens at the council offices. This will take up to 15 minutes.

Once your vehicle has passed the inspection, you will receive email confirmation and will be required to undertake an MOT at one of the garages below.

MOT test

You will need to take your vehicle for a test at one of our approved MOT centres:

  • Bansal Motors
    Tel: 01793 436478
Address: Unit 22, Cheney Manor Industrial Estate, Swindon SN2 2PJ
  • Cross Street Garage
    Tel: 01793 524333
Address: Transfer Bridges Industrial Estate, County Road, Swindon SN1 2EL

Once the test is completed and your vehicle has passed, you will need to return to your online application and upload the MOT certificate signed by the MOT centre.

Once we have received your MOT certificate, we will prepare your licence plate ready to be collected.

We aim to issue licenses within 10 working days of successful validation. You will be advised when your plate licence is ready and this can be collected from the Central Library in Swindon.
