Dispose of asbestos safely

Asbestos is a hazardous waste substance and must only be moved or disposed of under strict health and safety rules.

It is not advisable for you to attempt to dismantle or remove asbestos without professional assistance. Only licenced contractors can dispose of asbestos at a licenced site. It is a criminal offence not to do so and you should check that any contractor you employ will be using a licensed disposal site.

Swindon Borough Council is fully licensed to dispose of asbestos. For disposal, all items of asbestos must be double-wrapped in appropriate materials (e.g. heavy duty plastic or polythene sheeting or bags) and sealed with tape to stop any fibres or dust escaping. Each sealed item must be no heavier than 25kg.

Please note that all wrapped items are examined at the HWRC prior to disposal and those not wrapped sufficiently or any that are too heavy to be safely lifted will be refused for reasons of health and safety.

We offer two types of service for correctly wrapped asbestos:

Collection and Disposal Service

We can collect asbestos from your home or business and arrange for it to be disposed of by our specialist staff. To arrange this please telephone 01793 445501.

Collection and disposal costs £7.90 (including VAT) per item collected. Items can be wrapped for you for an additional charge.

Disposal at the Household Waste Recycling Centre

Wrapped and sealed bags of asbestos can also be taken to the Household Waste Recycling Centre.

Disposal at the HWRC costs £7.90 (inclusive of VAT) per wrapped item. If you deliver asbestos packages yourself, you should ask one of the staff at the HWRC where it should be deposited.
