Voter ID requirement

You must show an accepted form of photo ID when you vote at a polling station in Swindon.

Photo ID you can use

Accepted forms of photo ID include:

Passports

  • a passport issued by the UK, Channel Islands, Isle of Man, a British Overseas Territory, European Economic Area state, or Commonwealth country

Driving and parking documents

  • a driving licence issued by the UK, Channel Islands, Isle of Man, or a European Economic Area state
  • a Blue Badge

Travel passes

  • an older person’s bus pass
  • a disabled person’s bus pass
  • an Oyster 60+ card
  • a Freedom Pass

Proof of age cards

  • a card with the Proof of Age Standards Scheme hologram, known as a PASS card

The name on your photo ID should match the name you used to register to vote.

You cannot use your poll card as identification.

Using expired photo ID

You can use expired photo ID if the photo still looks like you.

The name on your photo ID should match the name you used to register to vote.

If you do not have suitable photo ID, you can apply for a free Voter Authority Certificate.

A Voter Authority Certificate is a free photo ID document that you can use to vote.

You can apply if:

  • you do not have an accepted form of photo ID
  • you are not sure whether the photo on your ID still looks like you
  • you are concerned about using your existing ID, for example because it includes a gender marker

You must be registered to vote before you apply. You do not need to register again before every election.

Voting as an anonymous elector

If you are registered to vote anonymously, you need an Anonymous Elector’s Document to vote in person.

You do not need to show photo ID when you vote by post. You will receive your postal ballot papers as usual.

A proxy is someone you trust to vote on your behalf. Your proxy must show their own accepted photo ID at the polling station.
