Apprenticeships for care experienced young people

What help is there for me to get an apprenticeship?

We offer additional support for any care experienced young people wanting to apply for an apprenticeship?

We give the Positive Futures team advanced notice of any vacancies so that they can work with care experienced young people on opportunities. If a care experienced young person decides to apply, they will be guaranteed an interview and will have access support from our Learning and Development team around interview skills.

The Government now offers up to £1,000 to care leavers who start an apprenticeship to help with the costs of getting into work.

For more information on apprenticeships nationally, view the apprenticeship pages on the Government website and discuss with the Positive Futures team how we can support you.

What is the care leaver apprenticeship pathway?

To provide additional support for our care experienced young people to apply for apprenticeships at Swindon Borough Council, we have created a care leaver pathway.

The actions and responsible owners for this are outlined below:

  • The apprenticeship vacancy is identified within Swindon Borough Council - People Development
  • The vacancy information is shared with the Positive Futures team - People Development
  • Information on vacancies is cascaded to social worker/personal assistant/support worker - Positive Futures
  • The social worker/personal assistant/support worker informs vacancy manager, prior to the deadline, that a care leaver is applying - Positive Futures
  • The manager with the vacancy must ensure that the care leaver is offered an interview (pathway approved by CMT) - Manager
  • The care leaver attends an interview (any preparation or support from Positive Futures team is provided, if required) - Care leaver/Positive Futures
  • The successful outcome results in the care leaver commencing the apprenticeship (additional pastoral support is provided from Positive Futures team, as required) - Care leaver/Positive Futures
  • If there is an unsuccessful outcome, the care leaver should be signposted to employability support programme. Extra support from Positive Futures team is provided - People Development/Positive Futures
