Children's physiotherapy

Children’s physiotherapy in Swindon are part of the Paediatric Therapy team, working with Occupational Therapists from health and social care.

The children’s physiotherapy service offer assessments, advice and therapy for children and young people aged 0 to 18 years with physical difficulties or disabilities.

Physiotherapy treatment may include play based therapy, exercise and activity programmes and hydrotherapy (exercises in a warm pool). Physiotherapists also offer advice and referral to the children’s orthotics service (splints and braces) and can help with specialist equipment such as standing frames and walking aids for your child.

Physiotherapy may be needed if your child is delayed in the development of their gross motor skills, big movements such as sitting and walking. They can also work with mobility problems, neurological conditions such as cerebral palsy, neuromuscular conditions such as muscular dystrophy and joint and muscle pain/problems.

Who do we see?

  • We work with children from O to 18 years who have a Swindon GP.  Physiotherapy can be provided up until 19 years of age in specialist educational settings
  • We work closely with special educational settings and currently provide physiotherapy in several special schools and specialist resourced provisions to mainstream schools
  • Your child can be referred to the children’s physiotherapy service by your family doctor (GP), health visitor, paediatrician or other health care professional

Appointments and what to expect

Your first appointment

Your child will be seen by a qualified physiotherapist who will complete an initial assessment. Clinics are usually held at The Salt Way Centre, however if your child attends one of the special schools it may be more appropriate and/or convenient to see them in the therapy room at school.

The appointment usually lasts between half an hour to one hour. The therapist will ask questions about birth and development (meeting their milestones), any current and past medical problems, any previous therapy your child may have received.

Importantly, the therapist will want to know what you and your child want to achieve with physiotherapy.

Changing or cancelling an appointment

If you need to change or cancel an appointment, please give as much notice as possible by calling the physiotherapy department on 01793 464246. There is an answerphone for out of hours calls.

Leave your child’s name and contact telephone number and details of the appointment you need to change. This will enable us to have your information ready when we return your call.
