Route safety improvement schemes
We use collision data to identify routes where changes could reduce road casualties. These schemes may include changes to the road, police enforcement, and road safety education.
How we identify routes for improvement
We review police-recorded collision data and the existing road layout. This helps us identify routes where safety improvements should be a priority.
We use a weighted casualty system to assess collisions from the previous three years. It considers fatal, serious, and slight injuries recorded through the national road collision reporting system, known as STATS19.
This allows us to focus our resources on routes with the highest casualty rates.
How we design safer routes
Our engineers follow the Safe System approach. This recognises that people make mistakes and aims to reduce the harm caused when collisions happen.
Safety measures may include:
- managing vehicle speeds
- changing road infrastructure
- using vehicle and road features to absorb the energy from a collision
- reducing the risk of serious injury
Road safety audits
Independent auditors review each scheme at different stages of its design. They also carry out an audit after construction is complete.
The auditors consider the needs of all road users. They identify potential safety problems so we can reduce or remove the risks.
Working with other organisations
We work with the police and other relevant organisations when developing potential schemes.
This allows us to combine physical changes to the road with targeted police enforcement and road safety education.
What happens after the review
We report the results of the review to ward councillors.
We may recommend priority sites for the following year’s works programme. Any work will depend on the funding available.
