Route improvement safety schemes

Great Western Way

Road Safety Officers identified the need for vehicle restraint systems (crash barriers) on Great Western Way, between the Blagrove and Mannington roundabouts, to reduce the potential for fatal or serious collisions, particularly those involving vehicles crossing over onto the opposite side of the carriageway.

This project was funded through the Local Transport Plan (LTP) programme, and was completed in April 2023.

The works involved the:

  • introduction of a central reservation barrier
  • improvement of the existing nearside barriers
  • relocation of the traffic signs, traffic signal poles and street lighting columns further back from the edge of carriageway
  • extension of the 40mph limit at Blagrove Roundabout, beyond the traffic lights by the Volvo garage
