Direction sign upgrade

The Department for Transport Traffic Signs Manual, the standard guidance for all road signs on the public highway, including those within Swindon, states:

  • “Clear and efficient signing is an essential part of highway and traffic engineering and a road with poor signing or with badly maintained signs is an unsatisfactory road. Road users depend on signing for information and guidance; highway authorities depend on signing for the efficient working and the enforcement of traffic regulations, for traffic control, and as an aid to road safety.”

Road signs are vitally important for the safety and efficient operation of Swindon’s road network and a programme for their maintenance, and adaptation to Swindon’s changing environment, is required. This includes the updating of destinations to add new locations and remove those that are no longer required.

We will undertake an annual review to identify potential routes to include in a programme depending of resources and budget availability within the current financial year.

The review will seek to:

  • update existing direction signs in line with latest sign design legislation
  • review destinations in line with wider network changes
  • replace highways assets that are at the end of their life
