Green light to housing programme

If your affordability check shows that you are unlikely to be able to afford a tenancy at the moment, we may refer you to the Green Light to Housing programme.

The programme helps you improve your financial situation so that you can meet the affordability requirements for council and housing association homes.

Why you have been referred

Your affordability check showed that, based on your current circumstances, you are unlikely to be able to afford a tenancy with the council or a housing association.

You can find out more about bidding for council and housing association properties.

What happens next

A Tenant Academy Officer will contact you to discuss your situation.

They will review your finances with you and help identify steps that could improve your chances of passing an affordability check in the future.

Support available

You may receive help with:

  • training and finding work
  • reducing your household spending
  • debt management advice
  • checking that you receive all the benefits you are entitled to

Your housing application

If you take part in the Green Light to Housing programme, you will keep your waiting list time.

When you can afford a tenancy with the council, you will be able to bid for properties again.

Please note: if your household circumstances change, we will review your application again when a property is offered.

If you do not take part

You do not have to take part in the programme.

However, if you choose not to take part and cannot show that your financial circumstances have improved within three months, we will close your housing application.

All applicants must pass an affordability check before they can be offered a council property.
