Children’s social care occupational therapy

The Children’s Social Care Occupational Therapists are part of the Paediatric Therapy Team.

They see children and young people in their own homes and can provide equipment and arrange adaptations to make daily living activities easier or safer.

They can help with things like access into the house, getting around your home, accessing a bath or shower, accessing the toilet, and specialist seating. If your home is not able to be adapted they will help to support you to find a more suitable property.

They also work with children and young people who receive short breaks through the Home and Away scheme.

Who do social care occupational therapists see?

They work with children and young people who:

  • are under the age of 18
  • have a Swindon postcode
  • have a permanent and substantial disability

Who can refer?

Referrals are accepted from:

  • any professional working with the child or young person
  • a person who is the main carer for the child or young person

Appointments

The Social Care Occupational Therapist will usually arrange to see you at home. The first visit will be used to meet you and your family and to collect information for an initial assessment. They will work with you and your family to identify a list of areas that you need help with. This first visit may take up to an hour.

Further visits may include setting up and adjusting equipment, measuring for adaptations and liaising with surveyors. They might ask to carry out some of these visits with other professionals or the Occupational Therapy Assistant.

If you need to change or cancel an appointment, give as much notice as possible by calling the paediatric therapy department on 01793 464246. There is an answerphone for out of hours calls.

Leave your child’s name, contact telephone number and details of the appointment you need to change.
