The Health Hydro

In March 2021 the Town Fund awarded £5million to the Health Hydro on Milton Road which, combined with £1.5million from the council, will enable a full refurbishment.

Over the next year we will be planning:

  • enhancements to the leisure facilities housed within the building
  • repairs and maintenance to the structure of the building
  • additional works to highlight the building's historical features

This will enhance one of Swindon’s most remarkable buildings and put it on a sustainable footing for the future. It will also create a unique leisure and heritage attraction to draw people into Swindon’s town centre.

In November 2021 consultants Fourth Street were appointed to lead on the delivery of this project. Our business case was approved by central government in March 2022 and the focus is now on preparing detailed designs and identifying a suitable contractor.

The work being planned will deliver longstanding repairs to the fabric of the building and to the mechanical and engineering systems. It will also deliver refurbishment of the main pool and changing rooms, and enhancements to the reception area.

In November 2019, the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), on the advice of Historic England, designated the Health Hydro a Grade II* listing. Less than 6% of listed buildings are Grade II* designated and this means it is a particularly important building of more than special interest.
