In March 2021, the Town Fund awarded £5million to the Health Hydro on Milton Road which, combined with £1.5million from the council, will enable refurbishment works to get underway.

In May 2024, an additional £4.6million was awarded by the Heritage Lottery Fund.

With the funding, we are:

  • enhancing the leisure facilities housed within the building
  • repairing the heritage features of the building and enhancing its energy effiiency
  • highlighting the building's historical features

This project will enhance one of Swindon’s most remarkable buildings and put it on a sustainable footing for the future. It will also create a unique leisure and heritage attraction to draw people into Swindon’s town centre.

In November 2021 consultants Fourth Street were appointed to lead on the delivery of this project. Our business case was approved by central government in March 2022 and we appointmed Beard as contractors for the refurbishment in 2023.

The work being planned will deliver longstanding repairs to the fabric of the building and to the mechanical and engineering systems. It will also deliver refurbishment of the main pool and changing rooms, and enhancements to the reception area.

In November 2019, the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS), on the advice of Historic England, designated the Health Hydro a Grade II* listing. Less than 6% of listed buildings are Grade II* designated and this means it is a particularly important building of more than special interest.
