Service summary

Wheels Workshop works with young people to develop their manual dexterity and problem-solving skills by using a wide range of hand tools. The service also aims to promote a positive attitude towards road safety and responsible vehicle usage. Young people will have an opportunity to work on real motor vehicles and each session is adapted to suit the needs, abilities and interests of the young people who attend.

The service runs on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays during school hours as part of an enhanced school offer and part-time timetable provision.

The bespoke sessions can be adapted to work with learners with Tier 2 support needs and focuses on their individual strengths. The service can also promote positive well-being through the activities that it offers. The physical activities and high staff ratio help to create a safe space for all learners to thrive. The sessions are very practical and hands-on, while videos and questioning are used to support road safety discussions. Co-ordination skills are developed through the use of different hand tools. The staff have experience of working with young people with Autism and those with a mild hearing impairment and also have knowledge around how to adapt tasks to engage and enthuse all learners.

Staff have a range of qualifications, including HND, Model Making, City & Guilds, Level 3 Motor Vehicle, PTLLS, Level 3 Award in Education and Training.

Individuals are referred into the service via schools, the Local Authority or by parents and carers. They can use the service for as long as they need, up until age 25. Young people usually use the service for siz weeks to two years.
