Service summary

Purple Ruler provides support for students facing social, emotional and mental health challenges, as well as those with Tier 3 and 4 support needs. Individuals are typically referred into the service through their school or Local Authority as part of a tailored education support plan.

The programme is designed to build resilience and confidence, develop coping strategies and engage in learning without the pressures of traditional mainstream education. The staff working at Purple Ruler are trained to manage behavioural issues and support emotional regulation, helping students with both their academic and personal growth.

The curriculum at Purple Ruler is designed to ensure that students make progress at a pace that suits their learning needs and style. The service is accessible and uses multi-sensory learning techniques to support literacy and numeracy development, as well as interventions to support communication skills and social interactions. Sessions can either be delivered on a one-to-one basis or in a small group. Most sessions are delivered online.

The programme helps to ensure that students are prepared to return to mainstream schooling or begin specialist schooling with increased confidence and skills. The programme is fully flexible and can continue for as long as is needed.

Purple Ruler's Alternative Provision is available throughout the year, including term time, half-term breaks, summer, and school holidays. The flexible, extensive availability ensures that children and young people receive routine and continuity in their schooling.

Purple Ruler caters to students across both primary and secondary education, providing provision that aligns with each school’s curriculum. Staff also have experience of working with all major exam boards, which enables them to actively support students who are preparing for their GCSEs and other examinations. The staff working at Purple Ruler have at least a bachelor’s degree in the subject area that they teach, as well as TEFL qualifications.
