MindJam seeks to provide emotional, mental health and SEND support to children and young people through the use of gaming and game related skills. The service aims to build self-esteem and confidence, while giving children and young people a safe space to recognise their own skills and abilities, to talk about their anxieties and to identify their worries and goals. Through online one-to-one sessions, MindJam provides mentorship and guidance in a positive and non-judgemental space. Children and young people can use the service for as long as is required.
MindJam can support learners from a range of backgrounds, including children and young people with support needs in Tiers 1 to 4. All mentors are experienced and trained in supporting neurodivergent individuals including young people with Autism, as well as other additional needs such as ADHD, anxiety, stress and trauma.
The support can take many different forms and can be adapted to suit the needs of the learner. Some children and young people want to play popular video games, while others may prefer to access support through developing their understanding of game design, animation, digital art or music editing. The primary focus of all support offered is to promote positive mental well-being and to build strong relationships with a trusted individual. While MindJam’s focus is to provide emotional support and mentoring, they can support mentees to obtain an ASDAN qualification and/ or an Arts Award through Trinity College London. This is optional and can be incorporated into sessions to suit the mentee and their needs.
Staff come from a range of backgrounds, including teaching, support work, healthcare, psychology, film, animation and editing and all mentors have professional or lived experience of working with young people with SEND. MindJam also has two Mental Health First Aiders, who have been appropriately trained through MHFA England.
