Service summary

Connex Alternative Provision offers a bespoke curriculum for children and young people of primary and secondary age. The curriculum is designed to support individual children and young people, building on their interests and needs to help them reach their full potential. The service is inclusive and works with children with support needs in Tiers 1-3.

The provision specialises in supporting children who have a barrier to accessing and engaging with education. Working alongside the child or young person, their families and the schools, the service can be delivered within the home, online, in the local community or on-site. The service is flexible in its approach and responds to a range of needs including:

• Mental Health Need (such as emotional based school avoidance)

• Neurodiversity (such as ADHD or Autism)

• Attachment History

• Trauma History

Connex Alternative Provision supports schools and colleges in ensuring that children and young people are educated at the right place, at the right time. This helps to reduce the number of educational placements breaking down and reduces the number of preventable exclusions.

The service aims to ensure that the children or young people:

  • are kept in education, training or employment to help them reach their potentia
  • build meaningful relationships with trusted adults
  • develop effective social and emotional skills, through a universal curriculum, targeted support and evidence-based strategies
  • transfer on from Connex Alternative Provision with the skills to help them lead safe, independent lives.

Qualified teachers plan and deliver sessions, with support staff trained in appropriate interventions. Currently, placements are for a maximum of 15 hours per week.

The curriculum has a focus upon core skills (PSHE, English and Maths), Life Skills and Knowledge & understanding of the world. AQA Unit awards are offered to all children and young people.

Referrals into Connex can come from the child or young person’s current setting, or directly from parents and carers. Sessions can be offered 1:1, or as part of a group depending upon each individual child or young person’s requirements.
