Love Parks Week, which runs from 28 July to 6 August, is a nationwide campaign dedicated to the celebration of parks, green spaces, and the volunteers and workers that look after them all year round.

These vibrant, living spaces bring communities together and provide an opportunity to connect with nature in the heart of cities, towns, and neighbourhoods.

Councillor Chris Watts, Swindon Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for the Environment and Transport, said: “Swindon is really lucky to have a vast collection of parks, forests and other green areas located throughout the Borough. Many of these spaces are nature reserves and valued by the community, due to the history, wildlife, habitats and event spaces they offer.

“From the beautiful scenery at Lydiard Park to the Ancient Monument at Stanton and the circular walk round the lake at Coate Water, our various parks and open spaces offers plenty for people to enjoy.

“As many of Swindon’s parks are home to some rare and ancient species of wildlife and habitats, we must look after them, so I’d like to say a special thanks to our Country Parks team, including the Volunteers and our Parish Councils who all work so hard to look after Swindon’s parks.”

During the campaign, the Council will be focusing on a different park each day, sharing photos, videos and information on history, wildlife and activities on its social media channels.

The protection of species would not be possible without the vital work of the Country Parks team including the volunteers who work alongside the Council’s team to help with the upkeep of local country parks.

People are always welcome to get involved as a volunteer – as well as manual work, they help to run events, such as guided walks or wildlife workshops, and are an extra pair of eyes when regular wildlife surveys are carried out.

Swindon residents looking to find out more about the voluntary programme can head over to the Council’s website and search ‘volunteer rangers’.
