Exhibition ‘Landscape and Longing’ opens at Civic Offices
A new exhibition has opened at Swindon Borough Council’s Civic Offices.

‘Landscape and Longing’ explores the relationships between human beings and nature, through paintings, ceramics and natural sciences collections. Together, they consider how creativity and collecting reflect a human longing to connect with the natural world.
The exhibition displays the latest paintings from Swindon Museum and Art Gallery's collections including ‘The Places We Go’ and ‘Sleepy Hollow’ by Dee Ferris, which were recently presented by The Contemporary Art Society. The exhibition also includes landscape paintings by notable modern artists including Graham Sutherland, John Piper and Denis Wirth-Miller. Meanwhile, three-dimensional objects explore relationships between natural history and studio ceramics.
Katie Ackrill, Swindon Museums' Collections and Exhibitions Officer, said: “The new paintings by Dee Ferris inspired us to consider how artists use nature and landscapes within their work.
“We took the opportunity to explore these themes through the collections at Swindon Museum and Art Gallery. The resulting exhibition shows a range of styles and ideas within the art collection, so we hope there is something for everybody to enjoy.”

It is a great opportunity for visitors to see some of our fantastic landscape works of art, as we continue to make our collections accessible during this time of transition for Swindon Museum and Art Gallery.”
‘Landscape and Longing’ is on the Ground Floor of the Civic Offices in Euclid Street, SN1 2JH, in the inner foyer and Committee Room 3. The temporary display spaces are in use while Swindon Museum and Art Gallery relocates to the First Floor of the Civic Offices. Members of the public are welcome to view the exhibition from Monday to Friday between 9am and 5pm (except for bank holidays).
