Children aged four to 11 can take part in the Summer Reading Challenge by registering at any of the 14 libraries across Swindon. This year the challenge, known as ‘Mischief Makers’ to coincide with The Beano’s 80th Birthday, encourages children to visit their local libraries at least three times and enjoy books, audio-books, e-books and e-magazines over the summer holidays.

At the end of the scheme, which finishes on Sunday, 9 September, there will be a prize draw for all those who complete the challenge, with a selection of fantastic prizes donated by local businesses.

As this challenge is run by volunteers, please check the timetable which can be found at: www.swindonlibraries.wordpress.com or call your local library to find out more.

As well as the Summer Reading Challenge, there is a competition being run by Swindon Libraries Children’s Patron and award-winning illustrator Steve Antony, where children are being asked to design a new hat for Mr Panda.

The competition is open to all ages and Steve will choose one winner from each of the libraries who will receive a signed copy of one of his books. The overall winner will receive a class or nursery visit from Steve.

Some of the other activities taking place at the libraries this summer include a Drag Queen Story Time, being held at Central Library on Monday, 13 August from 2.30pm to 3.30pm. Tickets are £4 per child and are available from the Help Desk at Central Library.

There will also be a morning of rock painting at Moredon and Rodbourne Cheney Library on Tuesday, 21 August between 10:30am and 12:30pm. This event is free but donations, which will be put towards future children’s events held at the library, are welcomed.

Tweedy the Clown will also be paying a visit to Central Library on Wednesday, 29 August from 10.30am to 11.30am and children can get their free tickets from the Help Desk at Central Library.

The library service will also be holding an event at North Swindon Library next Monday (20 Aug) promoting Virtual Reality and Swindon Libraries' digital offer. Further details are available here.

Councillor Keith Williams, Swindon Borough Council’s Cabinet Member responsible for libraries, said: “There’s lots going at Swindon’s libraries over the next month, with plenty to keep children entertained during the summer holidays.

“I’d like to thank the staff and volunteers at the libraries for making these great events happen and for encouraging children to enjoy reading, something which is extremely important and worthwhile.”
