Next Sunday (6 Feb), Her Majesty the Queen will become the first British Monarch to reach the historic milestone and a series of Platinum Jubilee celebrations will take place across the UK and the Commonwealth as part of a year-long programme of events.

There will also be an extended bank holiday between Thursday, 2 June and Sunday, 5 June 2022, where it is hoped the nation will join together to celebrate this unique achievement.

Swindon residents can find information on how to organise their own street parties on the Council’s website including guidance on how to apply for road closures and temporary event licences. There is also information on the Big Jubilee Lunch, which encourages communities to come together to celebrate their connections and get to know each other better.

Various local activities to celebrate the Platinum Jubilee are currently being organised and further details will be announced in due course.

There are also opportunities for local residents to take part in the Queen’s Green Canopy commemorative tree planting initiative to mark the Jubilee. As part of this scheme, 75 missing or dying trees will be replaced with blossom trees in the front gardens of the cottages in Swindon’s Railway Village within Swindon’s Heritage Action Zone.

Meanwhile, a community-led scheme to plant over 5 hectares of woodland, approximately 10,000 trees, is also taking place. The project will involve close liaison with the associated ‘Friends of Group’, local residents and Highworth Town Council.

Councillor David Renard, Leader of Swindon Borough Council, said: “The Platinum Jubilee celebrations will be a great occasion for the nation and a wonderful opportunity to say ‘thank you’ to the Queen for seven decades of dedicated service to our country.

“There will be lots of events taking place in Swindon, but we want to make it as easy as possible for local people to organise street parties so our communities can hold their own celebrations.

“We’re encouraging people to apply for street closures in plenty of time so they can obtain the necessary permission to hold an event.”
