A memorial service will be held in Christ Church, Old Town, to honour the enormous contribution former councillor Brian Mattock made to Swindon over several decades.

Brian, who sadly passed away in March, began his 33-year career as a trainee local government officer before working his way up to Director of Housing in Swindon Borough Council.

A Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH), Brian served for six years on the CIH National Council as the South West’s representative and had been a board member of the South West CIH since 1978.

He was elected as a councillor in 2007, representing the Old Town, and Chiseldon and Lawn wards for many years. A former Deputy Leader of the Council and Cabinet Member, Brian was Deputy Mayor and served on a number of Boards in his role as an experienced community leader.

Well known in Old Town, Brian was Chair of the Old Town Festival for seven years, and played a key role in the event’s success during that time working with local businesses, residents, the Council and other public sector partners.

Councillor David Renard, Leader of Swindon Borough Council, said: “Brian was a fantastic colleague and friend for many years and we all miss him terribly.

“He was dedicated to Swindon and serving the residents of our town both as a council officer and latterly in his role as a councillor. He was a very popular figure in Old Town and always strived to make a difference to his local community.

“If you knew Brian and would like to pay your respects, please do come along to the memorial service in his honour and join us in celebrating his life with his friends and family.”

The memorial service to honour Brian’s contribution to Swindon will take place on Monday, 22 November at 11.30am.

There will be a light lunch following the service at 12.30pm. Anyone who wishes to attend is asked to email the Mayor’s office at: Mayor@swindon.gov.uk for catering purposes.
