Look out for signs of domestic abuse during the World Cup
People are being reminded to keep their eye on the ball when it comes to domestic abuse with the World Cup fast approaching.

Shocking statistics show that during the 2010 football World Cup, domestic abuse rose on average by 27.7 per cent when England won a game and by 31.5 per cent when they lost.
Swindon residents are being urged to look out for the signs of domestic abuse and play an active part in preventing it, with the World Cup due to start in Russia tomorrow, Thursday (14 June).
Domestic abuse can take many forms such as physical violence, sexual exploitation or emotional, verbal, psychological or financial abuse
Domestic abuse can affect anyone and could be happening anywhere and to anyone, even to people who seemingly have perfect lives.
Residents are urged to watch out for not only physical abuse but also the following particular:
- Controlling or coercive behaviour
- Sexist, homophobic and demeaning language
- Anger
- Change of behaviour after drinking / drinking to excess
Cllr Cathy Martyn, Swindon Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Housing and Public Safety, said: “Abuse of any kind is never acceptable and, unfortunately, it can happen even in circumstances where it doesn’t seem possible. The World Cup is a time to come together, support your team and enjoy the games.
“During the tournament, tempers can run high and people can drink much more than usual. This is not an excuse and should not be used as a fuel to be abusive. Domestic abuse is everybody’s business and it’s really important that residents stay vigilant and report domestic abuse if they suspect it as it could save someone’s life.”
If a resident suspects or is aware that someone they know or have seen is being abused, they are encouraged to contact 101 or 999 in an emergency.
