Council completes work on two schemes to help walkers and cyclists get about
Two road improvement schemes to make it easier for people to walk and cycle around town have been completed by Swindon Borough Council.

In September, as part of the Government’s Emergency Active Travel Fund, work took place at two separate locations in Swindon to help facilitate social distancing.
Surface improvement work has been carried out on the Old Town Railway Path, which runs from Signal Way in Old Town to the bottom of Kingshill Road, and on Kingsdown Lane between Highworth Road (South Marston Business Park) and Blunsdon (Turnpike Road).
On the Old Town Railway Path, ecological factors have limited the scope of the works, but improvements have been carried out at the following sections with specialist ecological advice regarding the presence of wildlife:
- Between Field Rise and the Wilts and Berks canal (Skew Bridge)
- At the junction with Field Rise
- The section between the Devizes Road/Croft Road bridge and the Springfield Road/Westlecot Road bridge
The work at Kingsdown Lane took place between Highworth Road (South Marston Business Park) and Kingsdown Nurseries. The road thereafter continues as a tarmac road to Turnpike Road and Blunsdon.
The improvements at both locations took four weeks to complete.
Councillor Maureen Penny, Swindon Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways, Maintenance and Waste Services, said: “I am delighted to see these improvement schemes completed for the benefit of local residents.
“It’s hugely important that Swindon’s road network is able to allow people to social distance safely and effectively, and we are taking this opportunity to further support more sustainable forms of transport.”
