Council’s election cycle to remain unchanged following Extraordinary Council meeting

Residents in Swindon will continue to elect their local councillors in ‘thirds’ following an Extraordinary Council meeting at the Civic Offices this evening.

Councillors agreed earlier this year to hold a consultation on potentially changing the Council’s election cycle from the current ‘by thirds’ model to an alternative ‘whole council’ election model, which would see all seats on the Council elected at the same time, once every four years.

A total of 34,225 Swindon residents took part in the consultation and, after considering the feedback, 31 councillors voted in favour of changing the current election cycle with 22 councillors voting against. As two thirds of councillors did not support the change, the current election ‘by thirds’ election cycle will be maintained.
