Earlier this year, Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras were installed at five locations but have been inactive as Swindon Borough Council finalised its data collection and protection processes.

Following the conclusion of this work, a 12-month trial will now begin to collect speed and road data from these locations to help inform safety improvements in the areas by allowing officers to understand traffic behaviour, identify persistent speeding patterns and gather additional evidence.

At the end of the trial, the Council will evaluate the findings and effectiveness of the cameras before considering any next steps. No decisions on deploying ANPR cameras at additional locations will be considered until the trial has been completed and its findings reviewed. Any future deployment would be subject to assessment, the necessary approvals and available funding.

Councillor Nick Gardiner, Swindon Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport, said: “We know there’s been a lot of noise around these cameras but I’m very pleased that they’re about to be switched on and start collecting data.

“As soon as I came into this position, I made sure getting the data protections and policies in place was a top priority so we can start the trial and begin to understand what, if any, additional traffic measures are needed for these areas.

“I’d like to thank officers for their hard work in getting this in place and carrying out the work behind the scenes and I look forward to seeing what impact these cameras have had in 12 months’ time.”

The cameras, while already installed, are now being made live and will begin collecting data.
