As one of Swindon’s major employers, BMW MINI supports around 600 jobs locally and plays a significant role in the Borough’s economy.

The visit highlighted the scale and importance of the site, which has a rich manufacturing heritage dating back to 1954 and is now recognised as one of the most advanced facilities of its kind in the UK.

Cllr Sumner saw first-hand how BMW’s investment in automated production has helped strengthen the plant’s long-term future and support production for MINI models manufactured alongside the company’s Oxford operations.

The discussions also focused on how the Council and BMW can work together to support economic growth in Swindon. This included exploring opportunities to strengthen local supply chains, create opportunities for local businesses, and help ensure the long-term success of advanced manufacturing in the Borough.

The visit also showcased BMW’s commitment to the wider community through its work supporting local schools and colleges, promoting STEM education, investing in biodiversity on site, and backing local sports and cultural initiatives.

A big thank you to Roger and the team for their warm welcome and for sharing their vision for the future of MINI Plant Swindon.

Councillor Gary Sumner, Leader of Swindon Borough Council, said: “BMW MINI is one of Swindon’s manufacturing success stories and a hugely important employer for our borough. It was great to meet Roger and the team to hear about their plans for the future and learn more about the innovation taking place at the site.

“We want Swindon to be the best place to do business, and strong relationships with employers like BMW are vital if we are to attract investment, support local jobs and create opportunities for residents. We look forward to continuing to work together to support the long-term growth of manufacturing in Swindon.”
