Lydiard Park hosts uplifting Armed Forces Day

Armed Forces Day forms part of a nationwide celebration recognising the dedication and sacrifice of those who serve, as well as reservists, veterans and their families.

Visitors to the event, which was organised by Swindon Borough Council and held on the lawn in front of Lydiard House, were welcomed by Swindon Mayor, Councillor Neil Hopkins, and Councillor Leanne Stevenson, Armed Forces champion for Swindon Borough Council.

The event delivered a full and vibrant programme of activities, performances and attractions, including a wide range of community stalls, crafts and family‑friendly activities including an interactive session from the Longevity Games’ Tim Howe.

As well as a range of military stalls, local steam enthusiast Colin Hatch, brought his Second World War Merryweather & Sons’ ‘Valiant’ Steam Fire Engine, while a large military crane drew curious glances from those attending.

One of the many highlights from the afternoon, included a procession by the Gurkas, led by a lone piper.

Part‑funded by the Ministry of Defence, the day benefited from a share of the £430,000 recently granted to 130 community groups and local authorities, including £5,000 awarded to Swindon.

Councillor Leanne Stevenson, Armed Forces Champion for Swindon Borough Council, said: “Today has been very inspiring, where we’ve been surrounded by cadets, reservists, armed forces personnel from the RAF, the Army and the Royal Navy. Collectively, we’re here together as one big family.

“It’s been a fantastic day. Walking around you can see everyone smiling, there’s a really lovely atmosphere - a feeling of togetherness - which is wonderful.

“This event is all about celebrating our armed forces, their successes and the great sacrifices they make for all of us. Seeing such a strong turnout from local people today was incredibly uplifting.”
