The scheme forms a key part of Swindon Borough Council’s ongoing work to increase the number of high-quality adapted homes available across the town. The development follows the recent opening of three adapted bungalows in Ashley Close, Walcot and delivers on a commitment promised in the Swindon Plan.
Keys were officially handed over to Brian and Pat today (10 Dec) by the Council’s Lettings Officers. They were joined on the day by staff from Prospect Hospice, who have been supporting Brian.
Brian said: “It really does mean a lot to me to be here. This home has been purpose-built for my wheelchair, which I’ll be using a lot from now on.
“It’s designed for someone who’s disabled and that’s exactly what I’ve needed. I just wanted somewhere peaceful.
“My favourite part is the veranda. I’ll be able to go out there, sit down and just look at the woods and the wildlife. I’m really looking forward to that.”
Another resident, Ms Lee, also received her keys. She said: “Having this adaptable bungalow means the world to me. Mainly the bathroom, because it’s a wet room and I can finally get myself in and out on my own.
“The kitchen is lovely as well – it’s got the up-and-down worktops so I can do a bit of cooking if I want to.
“The flooring makes such a difference because I can move properly in my wheelchair. Where I live now it’s really hard with the carpet, so this is wonderful.
“Having this bungalow is life-changing.”
Funded in part through Section 106 developer contributions and Right to Buy receipts, the new timber-framed bungalows have been purpose-built with step-free layouts, fully adapted kitchens and wet rooms, off-road parking and private gardens. Wider improvements to the surrounding street include changes to the road layout and new parking spaces for residents.
To help reduce household running costs and their environmental impact, each home is fitted with energy-efficient technology including air-source heat pumps, solar panels and mechanical ventilation with heat recovery.
Allocations have been made through the Council’s housing register, prioritising households who need properties that can support mobility or live-in care needs both now and in the future.
Councillor Janine Howarth, Swindon Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Housing, said: “These homes represent a positive step forward in both the number and quality of adapted properties we can offer. They put accessibility and independence at the heart of their design, while energy-saving measures help reduce bills and support our environmental goals.
“We know how challenging it can be to find accommodation that meets specific health needs, so I’m delighted to see residents beginning to move into homes that will support them for many years to come. This is exactly the kind of project that delivers on our missions to build a Fairer, Better and Greener Swindon and I look forward to seeing more schemes being brought forward.”
