Kicking off the festive programme is the much-loved Christmas Lights Switch On, taking place on Friday, 28 November. This free event will feature live music and dance performances, all leading up to the heart-warming moment when Lydiard’s Christmas tree is officially lit up.
Throughout December, the elegant state rooms of Lydiard House Museum will be adorned with seasonal floral arrangements, a real Christmas tree and traditional kissing ball. Visitors can enjoy the decorated halls on a self-guided visit or as part of a special festive guided tour with cream tea.
On Saturday, 7 December it’s time to pick a side, Santa or Rudolf, and take on the Santa v Rudolf Run. Walk, jog or run the 3km or 5km course to raise funds for charity. This event is suitable for all ages and abilities, with dogs and pushchairs welcome.
Enjoy an atmospheric evening of Carols by Candlelight at St Mary’s Church on Tuesday, 9 or 16 December. Experience traditional carols and festive readings against the backdrop of more than a thousand years of history as part of this long-established celebration of the Yuletide season.
Visitors can get creative on Wednesday, 10 December with Lydiard Park Hotel’s Festive Paint and Sip. Budding Van Goughs, or those that haven’t picked up a paintbrush in years, will be guided by instructors through a winter scene in simple step-by-step stages. Sip on something seasonal from the bar as masterpieces are created – no experience is needed.
Prepare to hear spine-tingling ghost stories in the atmospheric setting of Lydiard House Museum on Friday, 12 December. The tradition of recounting tales of the supernatural during the festive season goes all the way back to ancient winter solstice celebrations. Visitors can expect to hear about the grey cowled figure that stalks the graveyard, the silent drummer, and Sir John St. John himself.
Little ones will be filled with joy on Sunday, 14 December as they can meet Santa at Lydiard Park Hotel. Create special family memories, get stuck into some festive crafts and receive an early gift from the jolly man in red himself.
Within the elegant Lydiard Park Hotel, preparations are underway for a season of unforgettable Christmas parties. For £55 per person, attendees can enjoy a welcome drink, a classic Christmas dinner, an indulgent dessert, and a disco to dance the night away. Smaller groups are welcome to book on to the popular joiner party nights.
And finally, for those looking to ring in 2026 in style, Lydiard Park Hotel is once again hosting its luxurious New Year’s Eve Party. Enjoy a glass of fizz and canapés on arrival, followed by an exquisite dinner and indulgent dessert. Then, dance into the new year before raising a glass as the clock strikes midnight.
Councillor Marina Strinkovsky, Swindon Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Placemaking and Planning, said: “Lydiard is a pretty magical location all through the year, but the House has something extra special to it at Christmas. I’m happy that we’re able to offer so much interesting activity to light up the darker months.
“There will be something for kids wanting to meet Santa, families after cream tea with a side of history, or those who love the spookier side of the holidays.
“Anyone looking for fun Christmas activities in a beautiful setting should check Lydiard out this winter.”
