The car club – in which members can hire cars by the hour – is operated by social enterprise Co Wheels which currently has vehicles in the town centre, Old Town and the Oakfield development off Marlowe Avenue.

The aim of the car club is to allow residents access to a car when they need it without the expense and hassle of owning one.

The new vehicle at Wichelstowe will be the fourth car in the fleet and the first to be fully electric. It will be located in its own parking bay next to the Connected Kerb EV charger on Shippery Lane.

Dan Pavely, Wichelstowe LLP Director, said: “It is fantastic to see the electric car charging network at Wichelstowe go from strength to strength and the car club is a perfect way to try out an electric vehicle.

“We would encourage residents to look out for the introductory Wichelstowe offers and give it a try.”

Councillor Kevin Small, Swindon Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Finance, said: “We are working closely with Barratt Homes and David Wilson Homes through the joint venture to create a really special development at Wichelstowe, which has sustainability at its core.

“It is therefore fitting that the Borough’s first fully electric Co Wheels car should be available to residents in this flagship community.

“I know from a close friend who is a former Mayor of Swindon, that car clubs like The Co Wheels scheme, are an affordable way to get the benefits of a car without all the high costs that go with it, especially for those who don't need to use a car that often. I am sure the Wichelstowe car will be a popular addition to their fleet.”
