Wraparound care (breakfast and after school clubs)

Wraparound childcare is childcare that ‘wraps around’ the traditional school day. Usually starting between 7.30am and 8.00am and finishing at 6.00pm.

Support with childcare costs

Financial support for wraparound care may be available for working families. Visit the Best Start in Life website for more details.

If you are entitled to Universal Credit you may be eligible for the childcare element. To find out more visit Universal Credit childcare costs on the government website.

School breakfast clubs

Breakfast clubs support parents who need childcare before the school day begins. They provide children with a healthy start to the day while helping families manage work and travel commitments.

Most breakfast clubs are run by schools or private and voluntary organisations on school premises, typically opening between 7.30am and 8.00am. Some childminders also offer early morning care for families who need an earlier start.

After-school clubs

After-school clubs cater to working parents needing childcare for primary school children between the end of the school day and their work finishing time.

These services are provided by:

  • schools
  • private or voluntary out-of-school clubs, mostly on school site
  • childminders
  • daycare nurseries

After-school services vary depending on arrangements for your child’s school. Clubs usually offer structured activities, with collection options up till 6.00pm.

Childminders can provide the greatest flexibility, especially for parents with irregular work shifts or varying pick-up times.

To find wraparound care and holiday clubs, visit our Family Information Directory or email: EY&CBrokerage@swindon.gov.uk.

Services for secondary school children

The transition to secondary school is a challenging time for both parents and children. Some before and after-school care providers extend their services to children in year 7.

Many secondary schools in Swindon offer before and after-school activities for students aged 11 to 14, as part of their extended services provision.

Activities vary by school. Check your school contact details for more information.

As children progress through secondary school, parents may need to review after-school arrangements, particularly when registered childcare services are no longer available.
