Adult community learning

Find a free course

The majority of our courses are now back in the classroom. Course descriptions in the panel above will indicate if course delivery is to be online or face to face.

Face to face courses will operate in line with current COVID-19 guidance.

To access courses online in your own home you should own a device on which you can access an internet connection.

Our adult community learning service provides more than 100 free courses, enrolling over 750 eligible learners, in 40 locations a year.

We offer opportunities for residents to gain new skills in subjects like health and wellbeing, maths, English and IT, or to help them prepare to return to work.

What should I do next?

You may want to enrol on a course to help you return to work or improve your skills. Perhaps you want to gain some confidence or maybe you just want to be able to help your child with maths and english.

We can offer you impartial advice about getting back into learning. We can also provide information about all learning opportunities across Swindon including the local colleges and other training providers. We can help you find the right next step.

You can also contact the National Careers Service, who offer impartial advice on careers, skills and the labour market in England

Volunteering opportunities

The Adult Community Learning Team are keen to recruit motivated, local volunteers who are interested in supporting learning during Adult Community Learning courses.

What will I be doing if I am volunteering?

  • Playing a key role in the provision of outstanding teaching and learning provision
  • Responding to the directions of the tutors
  • Helping the tutor to prepare the environment and resources ready for learning sessions
  • Being a friendly and supportive presence in the classroom
  • Assisting and supporting individual and/or small groups of learners to undertake the work set by the tutor- including learners with additional needs
  • Helping learners flourish
  • Feeding back to tutors about learner’s progress and achievement
  • Encouraging learners to undertake learning activities between sessions

Please contact acl@swindon.gov.uk if you would like more information.
