Young Carer Award for Schools

Swindon Carers Centre provides support for young carers, including 1:1 support and group activities.

Swindon Carers Centre developed the Young Carer Award for Schools because young carers nationally were saying that they were not always getting the support they needed from their school or college. Local statistics suggested that young carers were not all achieving their academic potential.

The aim of the award is to ensure that a range of support is available and accessible to all young carers in order that they have the opportunities they need to achieve their full potential.

The Young Carer Award: Swindon Carers Centre has developed a set of 3 Standards across 5 areas:

  • Leadership and Management
  • Identification and assessment of individual need
  • Developing provision to meet need
  • Young Carer involvement
  • Management systems, monitoring and evaluation

The Swindon Carers Centre’s Development Officer for Schools and Further Education, is supporting schools to achieve the award, which can be completed in one year or sooner. Fiona can help with visits to the school to support the staff with self-assessing and implementing the Award, staff awareness training, young carer policy and charter development and training sessions for pupils. Swindon Carers Centre will continue to support schools when the Award is achieved by regular 6 monthly review meetings.
