Purse Dipping

who’s cashing in on your carelessness?

Shopping centres offer opportunities for purse thieves to operate.
Here are some simple steps that you can take to prevent yourself from becoming a target.

  • NEVER let your handbag out of your sight, especially in public places.
  • AVOID carrying large amounts of cash.
  • KEEP your handbag closed and fastened.
  • KEEP your purse safe at ALL times.
  • NEVER leave your purse on your shopping basket, on tables or shop counters. KEEP YOUR PURSE OUT OF SIGHT.
  • USE a handbag alarm.
  • BE ALERT—don’t let yourself get distracted.
  • IF SOMEONE knocks or bumps into you, check that they have not taken your purse or wallet out of your bag or pocket. It can happen very quickly and you may not notice.

Out on the town

  • Know your personal alcohol limits, don’t let the good times go bad
  • Don’t leave your drink unattended
  • Stick with your mates, look out for each other
  • Keep some cash on you in case you lose your purse
  • Short cuts can have long consequences, stick to well lit streets and busy locations
  • Tell someone where you are going and when you’ll be back
  • Safer sex—use protection
  • If you have one take a personal attack alarm with you. If not think about buying one.

When taking taxis

Calling a taxi

  • Whenever possible, book by phone and ask for the driver’s name and make and colour of car. Don’t get into any cab you have not asked for
  • If you cannot hail a licensed hackney cab, carry the phone number of a reputable car company, or ask a friend for a recommendation

In the taxi

  • If you can, share a cab with a  friend—it’s cheaper and safer
  • Always sit in the back
  • If you chat with the driver, don’t give away your personal details
  • Before arriving at your destination have your cash and keys ready
  • If you feel uneasy, ask the driver to stop at a busy, familiar place and get out.
