Young Wardens scheme back for summer holidays

Around 80 children will be putting their summer holidays to good use when they take part in a free education programme from next week.

Published: Thursday, 25th July 2019

Swindon Borough Council’s Young Wardens scheme, which is in its eleventh year, is a fun and educational, month-long programme of activities for the children of Council tenants.

Aimed at children aged between seven and 11, the scheme is run by the Council’s Neighbourhood Warden team, who help to keep the town’s estates safe and clean.

The programme, which this year will be running in Walcot, Parks and Penhill, will be officially launched by Swindon Mayor Cllr Kevin Parry on Wednesday, 31 July at Buckhurst Community Centre at 10.30am.

Lessons on road and internet safety will form part of the programme as will learning about stranger danger and fire safety. The teams of young people will also make some positive contributions to their local areas through litter picking, planting and other projects, and learning about the importance of recycling.

Each of the three teams of young wardens will also have a fire station tour, hosted by Dorset and Wiltshire Fire Service.

The summer of activities will be finished off with a finale barbecue and fun sports day at Lydiard Park on Friday, 30 August.

Cllr Cathy Martyn, Swindon Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Housing and Public Safety, said: “The Young Wardens scheme has been a real success over the last few years and has seen hundreds of children take part.

“It is fantastic that so many children have once again signed up and I would like to thank our Neighbourhood Warden team for organising such a fun and educational programme during the summer holidays.”
